Soldier's Notes

 

Private John William Grant, Company A, was involved in 32 battles and skirmishes while serving in the 5th Maine, Company H and 1st Maine Veterans Infantry, Company A, from 1861 to 1865. He was captured and exchanged on December 28, 1863 and was wounded at Spotsylvania on May 10, 1864. He was also part of Petersburg and the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. He lived until 1910 before passing in Portland, Maine. Below is his picture when he was 64 or 65 years old.
